Simple measures,
huge impact
A systematic approach to hygiene
The RABC principles applied to an OPL
attached to a nursing home require expert
laundry care. Only if based on Good
Manufacturing Practices (GMP) can the
DIN EN 14065 analysis and control system
become fully effective. This, though,
presumes that the technology used in the
laundry is state-of-the-art.
Hygiene experts are fully aware that
many problems can be pre-empted by
implementing simple and basic measures.
In Germany, these measures are listed in
the BGR 500 guideline; in France, rules laid
down by the NF Service EHPA apply.
Barrier laundry
One very important principle is the strict
segregation of laundry operations into two
sides: The unclean or infeed side where
soiled laundry arrives, is stored and sorted,
and the clean or outfeed side where all
remaining processes starting with unloading
the washer-extractor take place.
This separation can take place on various
levels. Structurally, this would involve the
installation of a diaphragm wall together
with a sluice for employees and, ideally, a
pressure differential between the two sides
of the operation. At a more technical level,
barrier machines set in a diaphragm wall
and creating an infeed and outfeed side to
the operation are particularly effective in
reducing the risk of cross-contamination. On
the logistics side, this separation is reflected
in colour-coded workwear and appropriately
labelled transport trolleys, racks and
containers.
Hand disinfection
A further critical factor is regular hand
disinfection. This not only presumes the
availability of wash-basins and disinfectant
dispensers in sufficient numbers but also
that laundry employees are made aware of
the problem and their responsibilities by the
laundry operator. Regular training is needed
to maintain awareness levels and to involve
employees as a team within the laundry.
Further measures
• Posting of hygiene and disinfection plans
• Clear responsibilities
• Regular wet-cleaning of premises
• Regular disinfection of tables,
transport containers and machine surfaces
• Employee training: Microbiology
and hygiene, washing and disinfection,
team spirit
