Hygiene yesterday and today –
And where do we stand now?
Dear readers,
What began in the middle of the 19th
century as 'the science of hygiene' resulted
in strategies aimed at physical well-being,
the prevention of diseases and better
infection control with a particular focus on
infectious diseases that has brought about
significant improvements in the quality of life
and life expectancy. A marked reduction in
the mortality rate has also been achieved
through the use of antibiotics. More recently,
there have been reports of antibiotics
becoming ineffective and that infectious
diseases, such as MRSA, are once again
becoming an earnest problem.
In old-age care, infections are the second
most frequent cause of death, with levels of
infection much higher than among younger
